Having conviction in the direction you want for your brand, or complete trust in your brand designer, are imperative for the success of a major rebranding. Rebranding a business is not only an investment in a new visual language (and consequently, a first impression), but rebranding is the foundation for a new physical presence for a location or product, and digital presence – the evergreen salespeople of any business. By either knowing exactly what you want, or fully relying on the specialist you hire, you can ensure your budget and timeline is used to the best of its ability. Business owner Adam Mintz came from the branding world and was a pleasure to work alongside with to develop a distinct brand identity for his internet cafe and gaming lounge. We wanted the branding to reflect the unprecedentedly pleasant and elevated experience Invictus provides its clients. From gleaming floors to warm lighting to greenery and comfortable furniture – Invictus isn’t your weird cousin’s gaming lounge. But it totally should be. This project’s brand strategy and marketing materials were executed by Maison Principal Dasha Zolota, visual identity design created by Maison Brand Designer Alandra Monette. If you’d like to know all the elements that went into building such a powerful brand, check out the Build Your Own Brand Formula.
Designing 43 pieces of cohesive indoor and outdoor signage is not for the faint of heart, even when you’re a seasoned print designer who’s been working in print production since her early 20s and has worked on newsprint teams printing 10,000 copies of newspapers a week for years. The secret to and difference between a good print job and a bad one lies entirely in process and organization. First we design “flat” 2D signage concepts. Then those signage concepts are mocked up into real-world images of the dedicated venue, where everything is revised until it feels just right. Then, there is coordination with the printer or print house itself, and installation. Print jobs are super satisfying but also can be super scary to work on, because it’s not just the cost of the design, but the cost of the physical materials themselves and their implementation. So if the foundational design work is flawed, there are exponential costs that can be incurred – which is why we take our process so seriously. Now multiply this paragraph by 43 times and we have Invictus Game Station. Maison’s entire design philosophy and process is outlined in The Strategic Brand Drafting Manual if you’d like more information for yourself.
At Maison Zolts, we always design physical brand identities before moving on to the brand’s digital presence, because the digital presence requires elements from the real world to be effective. Most business owners will start off by designing a website and updating it later – but that ends up causing redundant effort and inefficient workflows. When a rebrand is officialized and established, we work with business owners to create their multimedia story – from copy to photography to merch and signage and anything else that’s needed. Then all those items are layered into a website. Websites can be expensive when it comes to the development specifically – which is why you need to have all your branding and storytelling ducks in a row before hiring a web designer or developer. Otherwise you’ll either blow through budget by changing scope or you can even ruin a relationship with a website designer by not preparing appropriately. Maison thought of it all for you in this handy guidebook here – our only planning tool for holistic branding, design and marketing projects.
